Joe – Poppa Q BBQ–
In 2019 I acquired the Flame Boss 400 to run on our competition rib cooker. We already have 2 Flame Boss 300s for our big meats and we were looking to change how we do our ribs and needed another controller and didn’t want to spend a fortune.
I was little apprehensive since the device has no display. However, in my research, I found that Flame Boss released a firmware that offers the ability to connect directly to the device in the unlikely event you cannot connect via the web. This information certainly lessened that apprehension.
That said, set up on this was a breeze. The device was set to beacon itself as a Wi-Fi hotspot and I connected and added it to my existing Flame Boss app. This connection allowed me to setup its Wi-Fi connection and in less than 5 minutes we were all set and ready to go.
I was slightly disappointed with the square fan connector because it just doesn’t seem as secure as the round connector in the 300 but that did not stop this thing from working as well as either of my 300s. Truthfully the physical setup was a little easier than the 300s since there was 1 power, 1 pit probe and 1 meat probe. At this point I have used this device multiple times for various cooks and it has not disappointed one bit.
Some may look at the one meat probe as a drawback but in this case the 400 is a simple compact device and not really designed for multiple probes. If you are looking for an inexpensive device and only need one meat probe the 400 will not disappoint.
I used the 400 on both our Weber Smokey Mountain and our Backwoods with no issues.
Pros
Small and compact
Easy setup
Great price point
Works as well as their larger units rock solid temp control
Direct connect ability
Cons
Square fan connector could be sturdier
1 meat probe
No display
