When we released the Flame Boss 400, the new “headless” unit, we received a lot of feedback about the design. Since there is no separate controller with a readout, and the device must be configured and managed through our app, a WiFi signal was imperative. We heard a lot of people ask, “What happens if we lose our WiFi signal?” and “What if we’re at a competition and there is no WiFi?” or “What if the server goes down?” Well, we listened to your feedback and took corrective measures to improve our product, it’s reliability, and the overall user experience.
Something to keep in mind is that even if you lose your WiFi signal, server goes down, etc – the device will still continue to function at the settings you set prior to losing a connection and that goes for ALL Flame Boss models. However, this is obviously not a sustainable long-term solution for the remainder of a cook. In order to provide a solution to this issue and make devices like the 400 more reliable and easier to use, our engineers have been working tirelessly to release Firmware version 4.0, which features a local connect and direct connect solution when the Internet is not available.
The way the unit should ideally function is Cloud Connect, where your phone and your controllers connect to our servers over the Internet. This mode has the most functionality, including access to your cook history and cook notes. If both your phone and controller have Internet access, use this mode. However, if you lose internet connectivity, you’ll want to use one of the new options, Local Connect and Direct Connect.
With Local Connect, your phone will detect any controllers on your local WiFi network. You can then connect to your controllers to view and manage them. History and account pages are disabled for this mode, but in our future app/firmware releases we will be improving upon this feature so that you will be able to view graphs, alter the temp settings and receive alerts. If you have a router with no Internet access, use this mode.
With Direct Connect, your phone connects directly to your controller so you can view and manage it. Using this mode requires the controller to be in Access Point mode. History and Account pages are currently disabled for this mode, but in our future app/firmware releases we will be improving upon this feature so that you will be able to view graphs, alter the temp settings and receive alerts. If you don’t have a router, use this mode.
Our goal with this latest technology update was to alleviate any concerns with connectivity, add more value to the device and ultimately, improve the ease of use to give our users peace of mind. Our mission here at Flame Boss is to keep improving on our technology by incorporating customer feedback, ideas and concerns so that we continue to produce relevant and cutting-edge devices.
